“Writing” is one of the modules of the IELTS exam. It’s a “Two part” question where you get Task 1 and Task 2. It might be simple at first glimpse but this task is quite challenging considering the fact that you only have 20 minutes for Task 1 and 40 minutes for Task 2. One of the key problems that have been faced by many IELTS candidates is time management for Task 1 and brainstorming. In this blog, I will try my utmost to make you all comprehend the simple strategy to accomplish these horrifying problems.
Time management
One of the biggest threats for a fragile candidate is “Time management”. Managing your time without knowing the proper guideline for the writing modules is like stepping on the moon without the proper gear or suit. You might find it very difficult at the beginning but as long as you train yourself by restraining yourself from using the exact time that has been given to you then you can achieve what you desire. Didn’t understand? Let’s use an example: You are ought to write your task 1 within 20 minutes, right? Instead of being used to writing within 20 minutes, fix your time within 16/17 minutes. As we all know that humans are slaves of their own habits, and being used to writing in 17 minutes can make a huge difference in the main examination. Try to benchmark your writing according to the time you used and you might find a good spot where you can write every task within time.
Brainstorming
Brainstorming is one of the integral parts of writing task 2. This is the time when you ask yourself for ideas about the question and about the proper explanation for your writing. The first step to solve this problem is to take deep breath and calm your nerves down. DO NOT PANIC!!! We can’t have all the knowledge about everything and that’s okay. Then what you should do is to have better understatement of the question. Try to understand the question in your native language, in this case Bengali. This is where majority of the students make mistakes and try to understand the question in English. DON’T!!! Acknowledging the fact that, “English is not your first language” does not make you inferior to others. Try to comprehend the question in your own language and gather some partial ideas according to the question. You can use the questionnaire to write down your ideas or hints so that it may help you further to create explanatory passage down the road.
