Today, English speaking is one of the foremost essential soft skills domestically and globally. Millions of English language learners intend to have that skill, but many of them can’t. They look for readymade tips which is imagination only. Learning a second language may have several strategies but not any shortcut tips or techniques. Attending the speakers’ club is the most proven way to develop language proficiency. We, the beginner in the English language, are often from a profound academic background along with a handsome GPA/CGPA. When they are told to speak English before audiences, they are found sweating for being over-nervous. Some are found speechless. It doesn’t define their English speaking weakness but the lack of English speaking practice. In Bangladesh, a graduate spends about 22 years academically while a large portion of time undoubtedly goes into learning facts, not practical skills.
A speakers’ club conveys about 35/40 students with a collection of elementary to advanced levels. A specific time is allotted with the collaboration of 1 or 2 moderators who properly facilitate the club. Several activities like; pair works, Dais practice, group works and playing English language-related games are the major ones.
A club could be conducted within many segments and episodes. It varies from moderator to moderator. Basically, the warm-up session begins with silly topics which boost almost everyone’s confidence. This is not a wise decision to begin the club with any descriptive topic. Though, it may vary if the learners are advanced. Later, a descriptive session could be offered where students are allowed to collect ideas from mates; here, the teacher might assist them by providing ideas and points to give them a good start. Each session must have feedback and review. The ending episode may consist of a game or fun.
The prime purpose of a speakers’ club is to boost someone’s public speaking. This environment often leads a student to an inertial situation. This would be overcome if they are permitted to continue the club for two weeks. The most significant benefit of a speakers’ club is the environment. We do not have much time to engage ourselves with English speaking. The club consists of more and more members and everyone is highly interested in speaking English. As the club conveys the collection of numerous learners of individual levels, a slow learner may have a suitable partner among them. Similarly, an advanced student also may have a similar speaking partner.
‘Learn through fun’ is only found in a speakers’ club. They move from person to person and gather the knowledge which immediately finds a solution. Many immediate problems are solved instantly by their pairs, need not say the teacher’s support. Moreover, some crucial and contemporary topics are also chosen to be discussed before the audiences. Sometimes, advanced students find the best platform to flourish their silly mistakes as they are governed by a specialist moderator.
Finally, without judging the level, everyone should continue attending the speakers’ club. Undoubtedly, they will find their new but best version in English speaking.
